The Super Bowl came and went and as was predicted, Apple didn’t say a word about the iPad 3. Expect the company to make a splash in the media early this week. Apple has penchant for announcements and release time to take the legs out from under any announcements from the competition, often using the superior interest in its own products to gain free press which drowns out the kind of announcements its competitors have to pay for.
Last year Apple has brought a mid-level iOS software update for an iPad and iPhone at times when a competing smartphone company had brought the sponsored ‘trending topic’ spot on Twitter; the public interest and chatter around Apple’s release caused it to take nearly every other trending topic spot that day without spending a dime.
Smart money says that it wasn’t a coincidence. And now that rival Samsung just spent millions to run an ad for a struggling Android device that is too big to be a phone and too small to be a tablet while pocking fun at Apple’s users in the ad, expect Apple to strike back this week with an announcement that will immediately drown out whatever middling level of attention from the media and public Samsung might have otherwise got this week.
